ABOUT US

Founded by Boya Chetty in 1978, we started as a community based seafood wholesaler in Port Elizabeth, operating as Chetty's Fisheries. Within our first year the number of employees grew from 2 to 20.

Boya Chetty played a monumental role in the development of the Eastern Cape seafood & fishing industry by serving as: the First Chairman of PE Fishing Forum founded in 1994, Secretary of Eastern Cape Fishing Forum, served on the committee of the SMME National Fishing Forum, Eastern Cape Representative for the National Inshore Hake Association, and  SECIFA PE Representative.  Boya Chetty was a strong advocate for Black owned fishing companies & quota holders.

Eventually in 1997, Mayibuye Fishing was successfully allocated Hake quota.

It wasn't until 2001 that the name Mayibuye Fishing was adopted and soon after acquired several subsidiary companies.

With 5 shareholders, Mayibuye Fishing is a Level 1 BEE company.

Soon after, two inshore vessels were purchased; 19 meter Baluguru, and 17 meter Gurusam - allowing us to trawl for our own fish.

In 2004 the 34 meter deep-sea vessel ELKE M was purchased and started operating out of Port Elizabeth harbour and becoming the first P.I.D. in the Eastern Cape to purchase and manage their own deep-sea vessel and quota. That same year, Mayibuye Fishing was recognized by P.M.R. (Proffessional Management Review) as an Eastern Cape Leader and Achiever and awarded for The Company Doing the Most to Enhance Eastern Cape's Economic Growth & Development.

In 2007, Boya Chetty was awarded Eastern Cape Businessman of the year.
